Interior Design trend for 2012

Finally! New trends are emerging in home decor that are putting a twist on the linnear and lethargic, all-modern designs that have been so dominant in the industry over the past few years.

Colour- greys will definitely continue to dominate in wall colour, fabrics and furniture. Yellows, mustards and golds are hot and will warm up the greys and give them a lift. Orange is a carry-over from seasons past, but remains a great accent colour and is surprisingly easy to work with especially in the warmer burnt oranges. Indigo blue is a big colour in design this season that we haven’t seen for several years, especially here in the Pacific Northwest, although it has been used as a classic and timeless accent colour in warmer climates like Florida and Califonia. An easy colour to pair with greys, yellows and oranges.Time will tell if our clients will embrace this rich and regal hue.

Brown and purple – pls exit the room. These colours are done ( for now ).

Bring the outdoors in with grass green. This intense, fresh and vivacious colour will add vavoom to any room. Use it in accessories such as cushions, ottoman trays and other accent pieces – not a huge colour or financial commitment, but it will really make your space “pop”. Black and white – always in style!

Furniture – driftwood, salvage, natural reclaimed, organic and rustic is huge in North America and Europe. These pieces pair incredibly well with the simplicity of contemporary furniture. Popular in grey washed and bleached oak finishes. You will be seeing more variety in Industrial / salvage-look coffee, side or console tables.

Antiques are back! For some people they have never gone out of style but are now being given a second look by those who have realized how fantastic a great character piece or two can look with sleek, modern furniture and design. It creates the tension that every room needs to be visually interesting, inviting and unpredictable.

Hardware and metal accents – chrome remains popular but modernist polished and satin brass is in. That makes me so happy!

Fabrics – natural fabrics such as linens, nubby cottons and raw, woven silks in earth tones are bigger than ever, as are eco-friendly fabrics. Oversized prints continue to be popular.

Trend forecasts aside, keep buying pieces in a classic, timeless design, buy what you LOVE, surround yourself with beautiful things and your “stuff” will never go out of style.
